A woman with a big grin showing her teeth

Today, an example for you of multitasking and low presence.

When we multitask – and it’s not like we don’t know this – it can backfire, affecting our leadership, perception and professionalism.

Last week I was working in a large organision, in a lift after lunch with one other person when the director of the organisation got in.

They were  probably on their way into a meeting, but still engaged in conversation with this other person. Then…they pulled out dental floss and started flossing their teeth.

Now, is flossing in a lift a thing? I don’t think so!

Maybe it’s my British background, and they may have either not been aware or not cared. But I was internally going “wow”!!

Either way, it was a small but striking reminder of how easily distraction can impact our presence and influence.

When we’re not present and focused only on one thing, we risk losing credibility and connection with those around us.

I’ll certainly never see this person in quite the same light again!

So, next time you’re in a lift – or any ‘connecting’ moment when you’re on show – ask yourself:

Am I fully present? Or am I unintentionally undermining my own influence?
