Executive Presence Tune-Up

You’re in a leadership position and want to be heard and stand out.

To have positive and lasting impact.

Executive presence is about inspiring confidence and greatness in others.

And it’s a skill, not a character trait – so it’s learnable and can be developed.

Close the excellence gaps in your communication skills.

Depending on where you’re starting from, you may only need small behavioural and mindset tweaks.

In fact, small nudges often make the most difference to whether you get the opportunities available to you – or they go to someone else.

Here are just 3 excellence gaps that you might recognise

Close these, and you’ll have a much greater ability to inspire confidence in your stakeholders. For example, your:

team | direct reports | peers | senior leaders | board members.

1. Performance under stress.

How well do you present under stress? When you’re under-prepared, over-worked, or thrown off in the moment?

Do others see you as in control, prepared, composed? Or do you fray at the edges, waffle or just know that your tone or energy is ‘off’?

Maybe you ‘rehearse failure’ or struggle with negative self-talk or ‘loop-of-doom’ thinking.

Or want to be more adaptable under pressure.

2. Articulating a clear vision.

You may have a brilliantly crafted vision in your mind – how well can you articulate it (especially under pressure)?

  • That moment in the corridor with a senior executive.
  • During lunch with influential stakeholders.
  • At a strategy session or collaborative offsite.

It doesn’t matter how good your message is if you can’t communicate it well.

3. Levels of self-awareness.

How do you come across to others? Do you know what impact you have?

How’s your tone, body language, word choices?

And the higher up you go, the harder it is to get ‘real’, constructive (not vague “you were great!”) feedback.

This is where working with a coach – an external, expert pair of eyes – makes all the difference. Someone who’s trained to give you feedback that moves you forwards, fast.

Just 4 of the common challenges that my clients bring

Repetitive visual or verbal habits

Examples: Swaying, using filler words like ‘um’, repeated use of the same word or gesture, and so on.

You may not notice them, and trust me, other people aren’t always telling you!

Potential Consequences: the listener’s focus is more on these than your messages. It’s distracting. Your habits may also impact your own processing ability.

Speaking confidence – low

Possible Results: low presence, energy and ‘reach’ to your listener or audience. Delivery at top speed, mind-blanks, low projection, “shrink wrapping” of mind or body – usually both.

Potential Consequences: People either don’t understand or don’t engage with your messages & aims. Confidence challenges may result in low influence and persuasion (not always).

Speaking confidence – high

Possible Result: Experience, strong confidence and knowledge depth are important. They can, however, lead to “winging it” or thinking that “speaking from the heart” is always enough. It may not be.

Potential Consequences: You may lack structure or clarity, give too much information, or go off at tangents hard to come back from. Some people may also struggle to relate to you.

Speaking contrast – low in linguistic style

Similar vocal style and word choices create ‘sameness’. Our brains are wired to notice change, and it’s vital if you want to have impact. Low contrast = low engagement.

Potential Consequences: listener engagement dies, and you probably won’t get it back. Lose attention, lose the opportunity to influence and persuade.
